British hopes for a very soft border after BREXIT have been dealt yet another blow.
The British government had made an offer to be in charge of collecting EU tariffs in the UK.
But the offer was firmly rejected by the EU’s negotiation chief, Michael Barnier.
“The EU cannot and the EU will not delegate the application of its customs policy and rules and VAT and excises duty collection to a non-member who would not be subject to the EU’s governance structures,” he said.
Customs Union Versus Freedom
Analyzing the issue, BBC’s Adam Fleming, suggests that Michael Barnier wants Britain to join a customs union in order to enjoy smoother trade with the EU.
But that would mean applying the EU’s tariffs and reducing Britain’s scope for free trade deals with non EU partners.
Dragged From All Sides
Mr Barnier’s announcement is a significant blow to Britain’s embattled Prime Minister, Theresa May.
She is being dragged from all sides and has few options.
Her BREXIT proposals have been attacked by many within her party… and US President Donald Trump.
