Whether you agree with her or not on the issue of Feminism, you cannot deny that world famous Igbo author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has created a giant global footprint for herself.
Forget her awards for a moment. Let’s talk of raw influence:
Consider the fact that in Sweeden the government has given every 16 year old boy and girl a copy of her essay, “We Should All Be Feminists”. Amazing, isn’t it? And Sweeden is not even an African country but a European one. Sweden is one of the most advanced countries in the world. For It to consider Chimamanda’s book for all its 16 year olds is an award in itself.
Another author who had this kind of international influence is the departed Chinua Achebe whose book Things Fall Appart was one of the silent fighters of Apartheid. Let me explain:
Once upon a time, to ridicule the Blacks of Africa, the then Apartheid regime of South Africa distributed copies of Things Fall Apart to White South African students.
Their aim was to show their White students how ‘backward’ Africans where. But they quickly decided to withdraw the book when they found out that their children, instead of hating Black Africans more, really liked the character of Okwonkwo in the book. Their purpose was defeated.
Igbos, male and female are people who have a lot to offer, not just in Nigeria their home country, but all over the world.
