The waiver for Nigeria comes after a Canada-based Nigerian don, Dr Olumuyiwa Igblalajobi has convinced Athabasca University, Canada to remove the need to pay for and study to pass IELTS and TOEFL exams if they want to study in the school. Dr Igblalajobi achieved this feat through a protest letter he wrote to the university. Nigerians have been spending a lot of money to take both tests, even with the poor economy, rising dollar prices and dollar scarcity.
According to him, Nigeria is an English speaking country. Students are taught English from primary school level to university level. Besides, Nigeria, being a former colony of Britain uses English as it’s language of business.
Sound arguments. The university had to see reasons with him. Dr Igblalajobi who has before now convinced University of Alberta, Canada to do the same thing, says he’s continuing with his campaign to other schools.
The public announcement by Athabasca University could bring awareness to Nigerian students that it is a pocket-friendly foreign university for Nigerians to go to.
Well done, Dr Igblalajobi. Nigeria needs more human rights defenders like him.
