January 1966 coup was an Awoist coup, not an Igbo coup

The 1966 coup was an Awoist coup meant to install Awolowo as Prime Minister after the failure of Awolowo’s first coup in 1962 against the Federal Government.

The tribe of most of the executors is irrelevant. The coup took Nigeria back. The plotters stated their aim, which was not to install Igbo domination but to install dictatorial domination of their leader Awolowo. Was that why they also killed his rival Ladoke Akintola?
