Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Mohammed Morsi has been sentenced to 25 years in jail for his membership of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood.
The Muslim Brotherhood is the organization that brought him to power but was seen as too radical by many moderate Egyptians.
Mr. Morsi was also given another 19 years for passing national information to the international news channel Al Jazeera.
Many political analysts think Mr. Morsi was moving Egypt into a new ultra-radical stance that made its allies like the United States and Isreal quite uncomfortable, but Mr. Morsi had his friends.
Qatar for one was an ally of the Morsi regime, and so was Turkish President Recep Tayep Erdogan. but the present Saudi-backed regime was able to topple Morsi and stamp out the Muslim Brotherhood from political relevance.
However the Muslim Brotherhood s an organization that has deep tentacles and has previously been in opposition for decades, and an ember may still be on, even though the flame has been extinguished for now.
One supporter the Brotherhood can still count on is Erdogan who has not hidden his disgust with Egypt’s present rulers. The Brotherhood also has deep ties with other powerful foreign organizations like Hamas and is in power in several other Arab states.
