US Senate Democratic Leader, Chuck Schumer has released a shocking statement that belittles President Trump.
- The statement requests that President Trump should not be allowed to meet Putin again until/unless he reveals what they discussed in Helsinki.
Recall that in their recent Helsinki summit, Trump and Putin held a one-on-one meeting for several hours.
The only other officials present were their interpreters.
It is standard diplomatic practice for Heads of Government to meet one-on-one.
But in his statement, Mr Schumer said: “Until we know what happened at that two-hour meeting in Helsinki, the president should have no more one-on-one interactions with Putin. In the United States, in Russia, or anywhere else.”
Analysts see the statement as akin to asking for a sort of ‘parental guidance’ for President Trump.
Presidents are not normally asked to reveal the contents of their discussions with other world leaders.
It is not known if Senator Schumer was fully serious when he made the request, or if he just wanted to rile Trump.
Can Senator Schumer Enforce This?
Trump has invited Putin to visit the United States. It is not known if Senator Schumer would push for a law barring Trump from meeting Putin.
A law is currently in existence barring Trump from lifting sanctions on Russia.
Apart from making a law barring a future Trump-Putin meeting, there is little Senator Schumer can theoretically do to stop such.
Many Trump associates are under investigation over alleged Russia meddling in the 2016 US elections. But both Trump and Putin have denied any wrongdoing.
Hmnnn..
He should request for the outcome of the meeting through proper channel
