New leader emerges in East Timor amidst infighting and instability

When East Timor got its independence after a bloody occupation by Indonesia, there were hopes that the tiny nation with huge oil reserves would become a kind of Singapore.

But the aftermath has thus far been disappointing for East Timor fans and citizens. Infighting, corruption have largely been the order of the day. Why!?

Indonesian hawks must be laughing now at the carnage that governance has turned to. They’d be saying, “I told you so’.

With the emergence of its new leader, a new chance emerges for Timor Leste. Will it sieze this chance, or will it be the same old same old?
