American Rap mogul Ja Rule took to Instagram to share a picture of himself with the last survivor of the Black Wall Street massacre, a 107 year old woman. The woman was rocking the Igbo traditional wear called isiagu with a Igbo traditional hat emblazoned with the title “Ebube Ndigbo”.
What Was Black Wall Street?
Black Wall Street was a popular street of successful Afro American families in the United States. But one sad day in 1927, racists fell upon the area and massacred many of the residents and burnt their houses.
President Joe Biden has dedicated a day for Americans to remember these people who suffered so much injustice. People who were punished for daring to dream.
By rocking Igbo attire, she may be asserting her right to dignified existence. Remember that in 1403, a group of Igbos who were captured against their will and forced to the United States (during the Transatlantic Slave Trade era) held what became the first civil rights march in the US at a place known in the US today as Igbo Landing, Saint Simons Island. Also recall that many Afro Americans are of Igbo origin.
The Black Wall Street killings was a painful episode in the life of Afro Amiricans . They were kill for doing right.
