Iguaro Ndigbo is the Igbo New Year’s Day. Just as the Chinese have their own New Years Day, the Igbos have theirs. On the Day of Iguaro Ndigbo, the lunar calender of the Igbos is launched. Iguaro is held in Nri, which s part if the ancestral area of the Igbos – that is, the area where Eri and his family settled in.
The cultural festival usually holds every February.
The Igbo lunar calendar has 13 lunar months. Each of these months has seven weeks. The weeks are divided into 4 market days, namely, Eke, Orie, Afor and Nkwo.
I call on Igbo state governors to give more recognition to the Lunar Igbo calendar. I call on Igbo companies to start their financial years based on Iguaro.
NRI has done a lot to preserve the Igbo Lunar Calender. Every Igbo should adopt it more and more.
If the Chinese are proud of their on New Year, we Igbos should be proud of our own too. Fireworks should become part of the Iguaro celebration worldwide, following the lead of NRI.
