A group, Citizens Rally Against Oppression (CR), today held a protest rally against planned increases of legal costs scheduled to kick off early next year.
The group were protesting a planned mandatory N100, 000 penalty against lawyers for absense in court.
They were also protesting a planned 500% increase in penalties for late filing of court processes, as well as a planned 1000% increase in filing fees.
A statement by the group addressed to the Chief Judge of Lagos State read in part:
“Hon. Chief Judge of Lagos State, we know your Lordship means well, BUT, Please don’t drive Lagosians from the courts and encourage self-help.
“Judicial justice is a compulsory social contract service and not REVENUE GENERATION BUSINESS FOR GOBERNMENT! The country is hard enough for the MASSES.”
The statement was signed by the group’s Chairman, Adesina Ogunlana and its Secretary, Ayo Ademuluyi.
I so much love the part that states that court is not a REVENUE GENERATION BUSINESS FOR GOBERNMENT!! Very true.
May God help us!
