Breaking: English golfer Danny Willet surprises Jordan Spieth to win the Masters

In an upset result that would leave the bookmakers with raised eyebrows, British golfer Danny Willet has won the US golf Masters. This is the first time since 1966 that a Briton is winning the prestigious golf tourney. The last Briton to win it was Nick Faldo in 1966.

The win, which is one of the most important in the sport of golf is even more surprising because Mr Willet has never won on the PGA Tour. Interestingly, Willet almost missed the masters because he said he wouldn’t go if his wife was still pregnant. Fortunately or fortuitously, his wife gave birth to their son Zachariah a week early. So he was able to make the tour (bros that your son, you suppose name am Goodluck.)

Jordan Spieth was expected to retain this year’s Masters, but Willett, 28, with typical British persistence, managed to hold both he and Lee Westwood with 5 birdies (don’t know what that means? you need to become a golf fan, bro). That was enough to get him a green jacket, which is the price for this most prestigious of golf contests. He had shot a 67 to finish at 5 under par.

Willet was pictured phoning his wife back home afterwards to tell her the good news, and he reported that she said something like, ‘Well done’; and when a wife tells a husband well done after he has just left her to hustle in another country only to phone her that he just won a green jacket, you know what that means.

So, please join me to congratulate Willet on his rise to international fame. I’m sure we will hear more about him from now on.

The Biggest ‘Loser’ Of The Day

As we said earlier, defending champion Spieth was the bookmaker’s favourite to win the Masters this year. The 22-year-old had hoped and had been tipped to join greats like Tiger Woods who have not just won the US Masters, but won it back-to-back (apologies to Olamide). His TAB odds to win had been cut down to $1.16 (sure to win).

But as the play went on live, bogeys on the 10th, and 11th holes and a quadruple bogey on the 12th hole threw away the game for Spieth. Ouch!

He still had to present the Green Jacket to the new champion. Double ouch! To get another chance at a back-to-back win of the Masters, he has to win the 2017 and 2018 editions. Anyway, don’t worry Jordan Spieth, we all know you are a champion.
