The only female candidate for Edo State House of Assembly seeking to represent Oredo West Constituency , Miss Charity Idahosa , says she is being unduely harassed by men as she tries to get their support for her political ambition.
Instead of these men to vet her based on her political ideology and electoral manifesto, they are busy making undue demands.
In a chat with News Agency of Nigeria, Idahosa, who is contesting on the platform of Mass Action Joint Alliance , described the experience as “ frustrating , and a recurring negative trend against women in politics. ”
She said, “ I came into politics with the desire to make a change and contribute my quota to the development of Oredo West constituency .
“ It will be shocking to note that people I had looked up to for support often asked for … gratification before giving their support and for me , it ’ s absurd and unacceptable. ”
The demands for undue gratification by randy men may be one reason many women shy away from electoral politics in Nigeria.
That needs to change because women have a lot to contribute to Nigeria’s political space.
