Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has called for the scrapping of Eze Ndigbo titles all over Nigeria. The call has led to furious debate.
Those in support of Okorocha’s call say the practice of having Eze Ndigbo (king of the Igbos) titles in every ‘nook and cranny’ should be stopped.
Those against his call say Igbos should be allowed to promote their culture everywhere.
However, a school of thought says the titles should be changed to Onye Ndu, which means leader. That way they won’t be confused as monarchical titles. The school says the Ndi Ndu would be in a best position to promote Igbo culture without the present controversy.
