Nigeria’s Supreme Court Rules Old Bank Notes Valid Till December

In a ruling Friday 3rd March 2023, Nigeria’s apex court held that a government directive to discontinue the use of old naira notes following a redesign by the Central Bank of Nigeria was illegal.

The Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the land ruled that the old banknotes should continue to be used by Nigerians, along with new versions, until the end of this 2023.

Recall that weeks after next notes where introduced in the country, Nigerians are complaining that cash money is so scarce to find to spend.

Coupled with the slowness of networks that facilitate money transfer deal alternative, millions of Nigerians are facing serious difficulty.

Some have even returned to trade by batter in areas where there’s a market for it. For instance, if you want a spoon of milk, you could offer someone else a whole chicken.
