Anambra Governor, Obiano assures Anambra communitiest of protection against herdsmen

Following the wanton killings of people of Uzo Uwani in Enugu State by herdsmen recently, Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano has assured farmers and communities in the state that his administration has taken extra measures to ensure that such a situation does not occur in Anambra State.

Speaking during activities to mark this year’s Workers Day, he disclosed that the state has long set up helicopter surveillance of the state’s borders, stating that with that, any suspicious gatherings or movements in the border areas of the state can easily be picked up for analysis by security agencies.

Obiano also disclosed that a committee has long been set up to ensure that herdsmen pay compensation for any crops their cattle destroy in any community, noting that such compensation has been paid seven times in the past due to activities of the committee. Interestingly, a cattle ranch has also been established in the community of Umuchu in the state. The ranch is seen as a model for the ranching system advocated by Nigerians as opposed to the proposal for the creation of cattle grazing reserves which is causing controversy in the polity.
