The US president, who is making his first visit to France since he was elected last November, and Mrs Trump, were first greeted at the Hotel des Invalides, the sumptuous military compound built by the Sun King Louis XIV, where they were shown Napoleon’s tomb.
Mr Trump and Mr Macron then went to the Elysée Palace for meetings focusing mostly on counterterrorism and military co-operation, while their wives took a boat tour on the Seine and visited the Notre-Dame cathedral.
In the evening, Mr Macron and his wife Brigitte will join their US guests for dinner at chef Alain Ducasse’s Michelin-starred Jules Verne restaurant, on the second floor of the Eiffel Tower. Mr Macron then plans to take Mr and Ms Trump to the top of one of Paris’ most visited monuments to impress them with the view, an insider said.
